Have you ever heard about the tomato frog?

Tomato frogs are found in the Costa Rican jungle. They get the name, tomato frog, because they are bright red, just like a tomato. When the tomato frog gets attacked by a predator, it discharges a milky white fluid all over his skin. This fluid is poison and it is the tomato frog's only defense mechanism besides trying to jump away. The predator that bites into the tomato frog will immediately taste the poison and then, most likely, spit the frog out. But by then, it is too late for the
frog since he has been bitten and injured, and he will possibly die anyway. So even though he has a defense system, it is almost completely useless since it is triggered after an attack.

The point of the story is this: Christians are very much like the tomato frog. We wait until Satan attacks and causes us all kinds of trouble before we use our defense system, which is prayer. We wait until bad things happen before we call on our Lord to help us. Of course, God is there to help us at any point during those troublesome times, but would it not be to our benefit to pray continually as Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18? In this way, our attackers are fought off before they can cause us damage. So why wait to pray?
